One option that comes to mind since your wife already has an Air would be to Airplay to an Apple TV (a bit over $100) which you can connect with HDMI to pretty much any TV that works for you. This also allows for, say, Netflix, etc.

If you have DVDs there's plenty of free programs that can rip them into a digital format that can then be stored on the Air or perhaps an external drive. This is generally illegal (copyright infringement) so I could NEVER recommend that you do such a thing (cough.)
