we have a DVD player in addition to our computers. When we were starting out I did not want to add another item as the computer would show videos just fine. Jill wanted the player, guess who won? Actually BOTH of us! What I found was that the DVD player used a LOT less power than the computer. And, when off the boat, we made a multi-day train trip, the DVD player was a bonus. But, they both had small screens. On a 27 foot boat, bigger was a hard thing to do.THEN, I came across the small LED projectors. I now tell people we may be the only 27 foot boat with a 55 inch TV!!
Of course, it's only good in the evening on a calm night. But, we have had other boats dink over to us at a remote anchorage for an outdoor movie night. AND, it only uses a VERY small bit of power!! Ours runs about 2 hours on a charge. I can feed video to it using a computer, RCA plugs or memory card. I did go to Goodwill and purchase an old used projector screen. I opened it up and took cloth (with the glass beads on it) off and we can hang that in the cockpit for a great picture. The small LED units are not bright enough for showing on white sails, at lease ours isn't. And the cost for was us under US $200.00. It's also not good for every day usage like a TV, but our new tablets are fine most of the time.
And like what was already posted, a TV can be used by Apple, or now the Google Chromecast for US $35.00. We do have a Chromecast at our shore side place and it works GREAT!
