When I worked for Pedrick back in the 1980s we were designing a boat for C&N in the UK. They sent his fees by wire transfer. One time, it took 10 days to get from England to Rhode Island. That was when I was paying 16% on my mortgage, so somebody, or several somebodies, in the pipeline were making some change. Multiply that by a few thousand transactions per day . . . (In those days, a check would have taken 3 days -- but nobody in our small town (Newport) would know what to do with it.)
