I am doing a bit of rework on the electrical system and want to set up a receptacle type 12 volt system that does not use the stooped cigarette lighter socket. I am thinking of something along the Empower systems on airliners but I can't find a source for those sockets. Looking on Newark and DigiKey I find some connectors but nothing that looks suitable for utility type service. I am thinking a max of 10 amps for things like handheld radio chargers and auto type PC power supplies. For those I would cut off the stooped cigarette plug and put on a new end to match the socket. I am surprised there has not been a generally accepted standard established. Or maybe there has and I just don't know about it. Has anyone had success with something like this?
