Nothing is a comforting as delaying leaving from behind a spit of land a few minuets into a ships lane and making a 90 degree turn into open waters to find a huge ferry going the other direction in your path. I can see this developing on AIS where my radar would have land structures block the line of sight. This is a common occurrence in Port Jefferson. I also confess that I often don't boot up my radar in nice weather whereas the AIS is always on underway.
