I don't know where you are, but I can tell you this. In the Gulf ICW, beween Galveston Tex and New Orleans La

which in 6 round trips, I have found to be THE busiest section of the entire US ICW with tow boats, if you don't have an AIS running so you can call the tows by name, they pretty much WILL NOT respond on VHF. No more of this "west bound tow at mile ??, this is the sailboat east bound" You'll get silence 90% of the time.

Radar would , in that area, be fairly useless, but next I travel east from Texas waters I WILL have at least an AIS reciever.
