Modern ship captains: Do you look at AIS or Radar?
I don't know about where you're going, Jon; but
Not concerned about pangas, fishing boats, lobster boats...
The one thing Pangas aren't doing is keeping watch! Especially
I doubt my radar would pick those up
As long as you are in the US Radar and chart over lays work
Radar overlay on charts work perfectly South of the US border
leopard shark being consumed by sealion?
Sorry, that was from photo day, but it keeps reattaching itself
Pangas don't use AIS and neither do
You're no modern ship captain, then Steve.
I remember hearing this one unfold on VHF
I remember as well..
I use AIS and radar.
Both boats with fully operational radar. That's disturbing.
I knew the Deatons quite well and remember when the lobster boat t-boned them
Wow! We're they fishing or just hammered?
Not much you can do. The lobster boats are working.
I always hope for wind in thick fog
I've been thick fog with lobster boats roaring from pot to pot
Sounds more like something Tom made up.

YMMV

They are just people so the rule, 'you're just around the corner from your next A-hole", still applies.
I was mooned once off of Stonington
They do have a rep around Stonington. Listen to this review on AC.
The reputation is well deserved and they take great pride in it.
I was berthed next to the daughter of a infamous
That's Dads boat.
Not an easy life out there. I watched "High Islander" come in this past season.
Me too. Sailing will save you. If you can't, just slow down.
I would like to read the story but I refuse
When I click the link it goes directly to the BDN story.
The first link did, the second elicited two answers . SO here's the "text" copied for Jeremy.
Thanks, SG. I like this part . . .
I mean to add . . .
Which is EXACTLY the reason when I was sailing across the Great Bahama Bank, Bimiini to NW Channel Light I shifted
That's my point. "of little use" is better
I don't know that COLREGS have changed but...
Right now I am in the civilized world and more concerned with practice than COLREGs...
You never know
AIS first and maybe foremost
Two nice things about AIS: low power and no radar detector interference
The SeaMe might not trigger response
Trouble with broadband is you have to change out your whole instrument system to use it..
No, just change the CP
FMCW radar still uses the x-band at a nominal 9.4GHz
You can't assume large ships will always show up on AIS
Turned my radar on today for the first time since the launch day test
Was this the inflatable you saw?
When I first got into navigation I thought an artificial horizon was......
I don't know where you are, but I can tell you this. In the Gulf ICW, beween Galveston Tex and New Orleans La
In the Chesapeake (and the places I've been north and east of here)
From Miami to Norfolk, last I ran that, I saw exactly 5 tows. The area I mentioned
so WM is just overwhelmed with this... which one is good?
