they might not have missed what appears on your 12" globe. There is a lot still to be learned about chart presentation on a 12" screen.

Apparently other boats did not see it (on the E charts) either, but transited before dark and steered clear. I know it's a race, but you might think one of them would get on the radio and say "You know there is a f**cking ISLAND out here...!". But perhaps the embarrassment of not seeing it themselves (until they saw it) was enough to keep them silent.
