Larry's reference to the Navionics chart web server provides some information.

The depthfinder (if someone would be looking at it) would have given a clue that "something" was happening. It would go from "no reading" to 1000' (or whatever) as they started into the shoal areas.

If you look at that area, it's clear that there is a broken ridge of "STUFF" out there.
