It seems to me that if you're single handing (and not on autopilot with auto-tacking/jibing), then with the Westsail 32 is the lead better from the stern? It looked that way to me with the tiller. I've never seen a Westsail 32 with a wheel, but maybe I've just never noticed?
On our J/boat, we have the very large main end-sheeted. With the position of the helm, I really find the position of the main sheet (and other winches) critical near the helm.
For example, if you have Swan 54 and crew of 2 or 3 crew handling the sail trim, then the helm's relation to the winch "farm(s)" may make it advantageous to separate the helm from "work" areas on deck or in other cockpits. I think most of us like to be able to (or actually do) sail our boats single handed. Certainly, we want everything "handy" and not requiring intercoms or yelling to get things done ;^))).
