A few years ago a friend was towing his Avon as he came around the East end of Santa Cruz island here in Southern California's Channel Islands. The Channel Islands have an area called 'Windy Lane' where the wind whips around Pt. Conception hits the island chain and funnels around it. The funneling makes for some heavy winds along the North side of the island.
Anyway, he came around the island and hit 'Windy Lane' (40 knots from 10 in an instant). The Avon literally flew out of the water, over the boat and the painter snagged on his masthead. He watched his 9 foot avon flying off his masthead for a minute wondering what to do when it let loose and flew off into the distance not to be seen again. A few days later he got a call from someone who found it on the beach.
I always thought it must have been an amazing experience.
You never know what will happen when you tow.
