Flares, like paper charts are on the way to histories dust bin. AIS, Radar, Sat phones and emergency beacons make the use of flares less, and less likely to bring a rescue. In fact I was taught ( 20+ years ago) to save the flare until contact was made, or you hear a plane or helo, to pin=point a location for the rescuers.
