A trick I have used for many years is to spray parts with clear coat. You can pick up clear lacquer at most home improvement stores or actual clear coat automotive paint at the auto parts store. You just have to make sure the surface is free of wax, oil, silicone, etc. You can wipe it down with isopropyl alcohol or get fancy degreaser/silicone remover at the auto supply.
