You'd rue the day that you had to mess with that. The other issue is weight. Since you are presumably going to a fixed length pole (instead of a tube in tube), overall weight probably isn't an issue.
I suspect that the tube diameter is going be a less of an issue than a much longer pole because you have less bending and buckling concerns (compression).
Of course we sailors can break almost anything ;^)))
For fun, I'd look-up the alloy to make sure that you don't do something "dumb". It's worth a "Google" search unless your into inorganic chemistry.(nl)
