Many of my best shots on the water are with the 10mm wide angle. My other lens is a 28 to 135 zoom. Using that lens, more and more I find myself wanting a wider lens, especially on the water.
I think(not sure) the reason I prefer the wide angle is that it puts my eye or being(as the viewer), 'on' the boat. On the boat is where I want the viewer to be. A wider lens is a challenge to find a good shot, it teaches you to see differently(I think). The longer lens image has trouble staying on the boat with me. The longer lens makes me want to get in the dinghy to shoot something onboard. It has it's place - especially projecting my eye somewhere else.
There are some distortions to deal with(with wide lenses) but I can fix some of those with how I frame the shot and by upping the zoom a bit. Some distortion is pleasing.
I like a shot like this one below, that can only be had with a wide lens. I think it gives a more intimate view or feel of being on the sailboat. And for cockpit or cabin shots, 10mm gives you a lot to work with.
