I like nature photography so I bought a 55-300mm lens along with the 18-55 kit lens. The long lens is about the same cost as the camera body but greatly increases the range of use. If you plan on getting a longer zoom lens for the Nikon compare the 55-300 to the 55-200. I found the 300 mm lens on sale for only a few bucks more and the aperture range is close to the same. The longer lens is useful for nature shots although I'm not sure it will be much use on the boat.

I haven't used this setup much yet but the little I have shot with it I found it a nice step up from my Canon Powershot SX40.
