Re: Racing in ill suited sailboats seems more popular today.

Interesting comments regarding One-Design racing. I hadn't viewed it from that perspective (not really being a racer type anyway, I suppose).

One-design was an attempt at making competition available to the masses wasn't/isn't it? Today, almost ANY new boat is not particularly inexpensive and I think that if one has the resources, one is inclined to spend their money on what works for the individual. After all, almost by definition a one-design won't meet everyone's standards of fit out, aesthetics, accommodations, performance, etc, etc. So once I commit to spending 6 figures on a new boat, I"m looking for something that fits 'me'. Even in the 'small' multihull, performance, racing boats such as the Pulse, F-22, etc, the prices go far beyond most folks willingness to spend.

I think this is the key to the decline of one-design--new boats are expensive, there's no economy to having a one-design and folks time and resources are less likely to be solely committed to such things. But we've been down this road before and one-design is yet another aspect of boating that is also suffering...
