I was at Camper & Nicholsons where we built a cruising yacht on an Ocean 80 hull. The owner had a young skipper who insisted that the boat needed a steering wheel at least 6 feet in diameter. In the design office, we weren't sure about the wisdom of that, but the owner went along with it . . . until . . .
He was visiting the yard one day and the managing director took him of a tour of the boat to show him how it was progressing. The owner was pleased with the crew's quarters forward, the galley the saloon . . then the MD said, "Let's go see the master stateroom . . . through here -- but duck as you go through the passageway."
The owner ducked -- and it was a deep duck, then turned to the MD and said, "What was that?"
"That, sir, was the well to accommodate your 6-foot wheel."
"Forget that!"
Of course, the "well" was a dummy . . . but it made the point.
