YES! First hand (no pun intended) experience

If the idea of adapting any land based, 110v refrigeration unit has crossed your mind, don't do it! I sadly tried to follow the lead of a few others in our club, adapting older dorm style mini-fridges to convert the ice box on our Islander to a fridge/freezer. That debacle was documented and presented in Good Old Boat as a "learn from me" what not to do project. My left hand was never the same, a piece of sheet metal cut down through the nerves to the bone. The thumb still works OK but has no feeling and assists in weather prediction. In the process, I destroyed a perfectly good dorm ridge and ended up with an angry Admiral.

Chapter two on this was to install a Peltier unit into the side of the same icebox. I purchased a new Igloo 12volt fridge/cooler with the expectation of doing a transplant. In that process I was discouraged by everyone because the Peltier unit would be a huge energy drain on the 12 volt system while providing only marginal cooling based on the ambient air temperature and would also cause the icebox to become much less efficient as an icebox if the power ran out, acting as a big aluminum heatsink. I know have two brand new 12 volt Igloos sitting on a shelf in my workshop. Never used either.
