I'm in the minority on tablets. Seems most want to find a fixed spot - a binnacle mount or bracket and a waterproof cover. Make it a permanent fixture on their boat. I get that, but I prefer moving the tablet - endlessly it seems - as we sail. No only to view easily, but to use the touchscreen. There's just no one spot in the cockpit that would work for me.
And this tablet has proven to be pretty tough. This ipad 2 is now 4 or 5 years old. It get's used (abused) every day, for hours. My wife uses it as her at home computer(with her iphone) for everything from mail, messaging and movies (while she uses a treadmill or spinning bike) for hours. Then at night she'll use it for a movie or music with ear phones (I like dark movies ). It hits the floor pretty regularly without any special case. Still holds a charge. It's tough!
Then I throw it in my camera bag and take it to the boat. I find the best holder is that blue dumb bell on the bridgedeck. I use it to prop it up under the dodger or on the bridgedeck while heeled. If conditions get bad, it goes below. No it won't survive a dunking, but neither will my camera. Each of which is much more useful if it's not pinned down or below out of reach.
This is one of rare times I was sailing from behind the wheel. It was only because I was taking a photo from there. We're ghosting up Bluehill Bay.
