I use a dockline with a loop on the end, thrown over the main sheet winch.

That seems to be the preferred location for my boat to sit on two fenders - a couple feet apart - parallel to the dock with a little forward throttle. I have a couple of mid ship cleats that are useless. Next time I paint the decks, I'll take them out and fill the holes. The cleats are too far forward. I can't figure out why somebody put them there.
I use the primary and secondary sheet winches for fore and aft spring lines in our normal docking which isn't long term.

- I have, but it works way better with an aft breast spring. That puts the force amidships and
- Spring line and aft stern line are the first "two" typical lines for us unless in oddball situation
