I use a short mid-ship breast line

Not unlike the way you see lobster boats tie alongside short term. Once that's secured the boat isn't going anywhere. Then I tie off the stern and the bow then reposition the breast line as a spring, fore or aft as needed. As you say, not always pretty but it works for us.

- I have, but it works way better with an aft breast spring. That puts the force amidships and
- Spring line and aft stern line are the first "two" typical lines for us unless in oddball situation
