Assuming you weren't just loading the sail, or you don't have your halyard tension way too tight; my guess:

You're on the hairy edge of wrapping your halyard at the head.

The winch is you enemy if your force the furling, you're at risk for really JAMMING something, breaking the shackle/halyard or furler head.
