the sail was flogging, the sheets were both free of the winches, so I don't think the furling line was fighting the sail tension. I never considered breaking the drum/shackle, thank you for that caution.

I hope to be able to duplicate the jam at the dock this weekend. I'm going to run the sail in and out and have a friend watch the drum and the halyard.
