If you are in an area of fresh water you must add salt to flush. It requires an electrical solution to work. I didn't do that often enough when cruising the East coast, so many harbors anchorages, etc are river mouths and estuaries, that I needed to replace the electrical anode; or whatever they call it. Very, very expensive.
