You might be able to use the same gypsy for both 5/16" and 3/8" chain...

It all depends on the type of chain and the particular gypsy. I have 5/16 proof coil chain on my sailboat. The gypsy for 5/16" proof coil chain is the same as that for 3/8 BBB chain (it is stamped right on my gypsy).

Frankly, given the cost of chain, I would see if you can get a gypsy to match your chain. 200' of 3/8 HT (G4) chain is going to cost you at least $700.00.
