The QWERTY keyboard layout (referring to the first 6 keys on the top row of letters, spelling "qwerty") was actually designed to slow the typist down on the old mechanical typewriters, so they didn't jam so often. A much more efficient layout, which places the most used keys under the home fingers, is called a DVORAK keyboard.
