Drop chain. No snubber. Back down until it catches. Full revs reverse and hold. Neutral. Give the catanary time to take the boat forward. Full revs reverse until the chain goes very tight. We've been known to drive forward and then back at a full revs. And when unsure and the consequences are dire (like a reef or rocks mere feet away) drive forward and spin around. Drive back forward at an angle to where the chain is estimated to hit the bottom and keep going at about 1/2 throttle. When the anchor takes up you know it right away. The bow dips hard and the boat spins around.

Toss the cap on the Tequila over the side.
