Here's the rig on what would be the "bad tack" of a conventional junk rig.

() I have a sailing dinghy with a gunter(sort of) rig and have always been aware how performance is much better on the "good tack". This is the reason for his off set rig. The sail shape can be maintained as it stays off the mast.
