Dave's got it right

Tom, I think that Dave's post says it all -- almost. I sail a C&C 35 Landfall in Long Island Sound out of Oyster Bay. When buying new sails, I switched from a 150 to a 140 genoa mainly because the last leg back to my mooring involves several upwind tacks. I did lose some performance but since I (70+) singlehand a lot and my friends are aged and decrepit I found that reducing the grinding is helpful. Good luck with your search...
