Just shove the end of a hose into the hopper, the other end in the bilge, pump away!
Actually, the Lavac takes a bit of training to use properly, as you can't see what's going on as you pump out. The casual user will tend to leave you 'surprises' in the bowl (which hopefully will stay there until you discover them - otherwise they escape into the boat..).
