Why am I amazed that cruisers still crash into reefs and lose their boats, especially in well charted NZ waters? 
I don't know the details, and am in no way passing judgment, but it still amazes me that this happens in well-charted waters (NZ)...but shit sometimes happens.
Friends of friends (distant connection) lost their boat recently in NZ, entering Doubtless Bay on the way to Whangaroa...hit a reef, boat sank within minutes...fortunately, they were able to deploy their liferaft, but didn't recover much else...
