Maybe you're amazed because you haven't hit a reef?

Looking at a local CG website, it said groundings are the primary reason to launch CG rescue operations. When you think that most groundings are survived without damage so are not reported, it happens a lot.

Many groundings around this area result in heavy damage to hull/keel but the full loss of the boat is pretty rare. Pretty sad when that happens, as with these folks.

I've had a few groundings over the years, one of which resulted in heavy damage. I can relate to those folks, it can happen. It's too bad so many sailors struggle talking about groundings, a lot could be learned I bet.

I would guess most happen in broad daylight and in good weather with well charted hazards.
