That drives me crazy

On a vector chart you can loose all detail of small reefs and even medium sized islands. On Tuesday we're leaving for Providencia Colombia and when I zoom out the island just disappears. This is an island that's miles across and it disappears when I only zoom out to about 30 miles. The only way I could find it on the vector chart was to put in the Lat/Lon and zoom in.

I've tried to set up the display to show more detail on a wider scale but it won't do it. I wish I had the ability to display raster charts on the chartplotter. I guess they don't do that on dedicated chart plotters. You only get vector. It makes it really difficult to make up a route.

I end up using the paper charts to do route planning. Write down the lat/lon of each course correction and transfer the coordinates to the chartplotter (c-series).

The last thing I do is to zoom in very close and slowly follow the route line making sure I don't have my course taking me into dicy areas and making corrections as necessary.
