The viscocity does not determie ratiing alone 
In Response To: DQOTD: diesel engine lubricating oil ()
() You need to look for a "C" rating (sp?) CD CF.... the most recent I believe is CI-4. 'S" rated oils are for gasoline engines. I lean toward Rotella or Delvac, and personally use the full synthetic.

- Shell Rotella T 15-40 is the big seller here, but I use Chevron or Texaco CH or higher rated oil...
