you have to take the pole's ends off and push the smaller tube out through the larger tube...

... there is a ring locked inside the smaller tube that does not allow you to extend it until it comes out.
Some parts are still available however most of them are in Europe/Sweden. I believe there were 3 different sizes; 60mm/48mm, 72mm/60mm and 84mm/72mm. Which do you have?
