Tom -- the connector is after the vented loop(s) on the "downside"

We have three independant bidge pumps for the "deep bilge" on our J/160. The two hand pumps (one in the cockpit and one in the aft cabin) join at the stern and exit above the waterline. The main electric pump exits along the starboard hull above the waterline.
I would suspect that your J/42 is the same way, if you have two supplemental bilge pumps.
