I have used a bunch of different products, almost all unsuccesfully when compared to Cetol. Yes, it is absolutely a compromise in looks versus longevity. I like Jerry's comments as well, I find that daling with varnish is way less fun than other things the devil is blamed for.

I have tried using spar varnishes, oils, coatings, Starbrite teak yick and always end up redoing everything becuase the finish does not hold up. So, this current boat is going to getthe Cetol treatment as soon as we haul for the winter.
