That seems to work for companionway steps on our boat Gene. I don't wear shoes very often onboard either. I think I injure my shins and head more often than feet. You're going to get a ding here and there onboard no matter what.

After the first 10 or 15 seconds, when you're not sure, nobody ever died from jamming a toe on a cleat anyway.
