I use a nylon jack line that hooks to a fitting

at the base of the stay sail. The other end connects to the base of the boom gallows on top of the pilot house. This arrangement gives me a chest high jack line to move forward with. I use a 5 foot tether that slides up and down the jackline on SS ring. This way I can hang on to the lifeline with one hand and the tether with the other. It works pretty well but I don't have a good way to hold in position at the mast while working. I don't want to install SS sissy bars at the mast base so was thinking of a short tether of, maybe 18 inches long connected to the mast at about chest high. Once in position I could hook up and if I fell, it wouldn't be far.
