From Russian River... "no randall required." Apparently a randall is a device for infusing more hops into a beer as it is drawn from a tap.
I think "Pliney" really does it right... really wonderful hops aroma with little of the bitterness... a really well balanced IPA.
But locally, I'd put that Pliney against either the Duet or Pure Hoppiness from Alpine Beer Company... problem is that finding those Alpine beers can be difficult, unless you go to the brewery itself.
Lagunitas Hop Stoopid is also pretty good... but not quite up there with those mentioned above.
A decent six pack is Ranger IPA from New Belgium Brewing Company.
The real issue with a lot of these craft brews is getting them.... since the availability of quality hops is limited, a lot of IPAs tend to be somewhat limited edition... and often only available on tap or in a growler.
For those who might be visiting San Diego... there are plenty of brew pubs about... with O'Briens perhaps being one ugly hole in the wall, but also "the hoppiest place on earth..." in the Kearney Mesa area (they don't brew, but feature some of the best micro brews around). I have yet been to Blind Lady Ale house, but hear they pour a mean pint. And if you happen to be down at Shelter Island or in my stomping ground of Mission Bay... the new Pizza Port in OB offers both great pizza and great beer (they brew on site). OB is just a short bike ride from Mission Bay (hint hint). Some folks swear by Karl Strauss downtown or in La Jolla... but frankly I find their brews a bit watery. There is also the Yardhouse downtown, while not actually a brewer, they do offer quite a lineup of beer... from Bud to some fine craft brews. And if you are into a long drive (best to have a designated driver) Stone Brewery in Escondido is not to be missed... Great food, fantastic beer... no whining!
Well Sailors... a tip of a glass to you all... enjoy!
