The J/42 sails very well under main alone

She will point slightly higher with the 100% jib out, but not much higher. The biggest difference is speed.

As for technique, our racing crew has practiced man overboard drills under just sail many times. As you say, the problem is usually too much speed, rather than too little. We usually approach downwind of the mark, close-hauled with the helmsman on the high side of the boat, making it easy to see it. To slow the boat you can ease the main or pinch, so you're basically not doing much more than forereaching. Then when directly downwind, turn into the wind and and coast, hopefully not overshooting the mark. It takes a little practice to get a feel for how far downwind one should be from the mark. For my boat, about 3 or 4 boatlengths seems to work well.

With boats that don't point well and you're forced to approach on a close reach, it gets a lot harder because pinching isn't as effective and the wind isn't doing much to slow your boat.

Best regards,
