That's what I was thinking. For going through some areas, it's nice to be able to sail like a Catboat.

I rarely sail to my own mooring as it's too crowded and usually dead down wind to it. It's nice to be able to slow down and sail easily, especially with guests as you mention.

Sailing in and out or through some areas I spend time sailing, I like being able to set the mainsheet (and mizzen on my boat) and make my way with any necessary tacks simply by bringing the boat onto port or starboard tack. In a few local anchorages/harbors, this is an easy way to keep your eyes on where you're going. Once you have some way on, it's pretty forgiving of trim.

It's a relaxed way to maintain a safe speed through some inland cuts and open harbors I frequent close to home. The genoa can be furled going in and unrolled on the other side or coming back out into more open water. Less effort on my boat than dropping and tending to the main if you intend to keep sailing.

It's not something I can do a lot, but it's fun. Some boats are particularly good at this and appear quite weatherly, although I don't know how high they can point under main alone.

It would be nice to know if they're are any good tricks to increase the boats pointing under main alone. I can move my CL a bit aft by bringing my centerboard up which may help. But I may loose some lift. Plus my boat seems to turn more quickly with the board down(it's takes room with a full keel).

The bigger mains with increased roach on some newer boats may be best suited to this lazy mainsail sailing.
