I use a french press aboard - but recommend the polycarbonate one (I try to avoid glass aboard when I can - another story). I used to use the Melita cone and filters, but I got tired of the balancing act of the cone on top of something else. Besides, you're always running out of filters and a paper towel makes a poor substitute.
From the press, the coffee goes into an Aladdin (Stanley) stainless thermos. Got mine at a yard sale for $3, but they're well worth the $30 list price. Keeps the coffee hot until I finish it - about noon time. Haven't had a problem with cleaning the press - just rinse it over the side. Oh yeah, a stir before doing the press will reduce the force on the knob and help prevent premature failure of the press. Quality of the coffee is excellent - as good as from my Bunn unit at home, but with a bit higher solids content. Coffee is from Duncan Donuts - tough to beat. Well worth the price increase from my old standard - Maxwell House.
