On my old boat my Monitor had a device that

allowed me to disengage it from my wheel with a push-pin. The device was SS and bolted to the spokes of the wheel and looked pretty good all things considered. You could mount one on your wheel and instead of running the lines to the Monitor you could run them streight down to a small pad eye mounted at the bottom of the helm on the deck. That way, it would lock the wheel into what ever position you wanted it in and be able to adjust it for sail/helm balance. In an emergency all you would have to do is release the push pin for normal steering just as you would be doing if you were releasing the Monitor from the helm. You could buy it directly from the Monitor people. Just a thought...
