It was impressive but maybe a little beyond my sensibilities. (Gaudi certainly challenged the builders.) I preferred the more traditional cathedrals dating from the middle ages... The wealth and power of the Church in Europe can only be appreciated when you tour and learn about the palaces and cathedrals and what is being conveyed in the art (and about the intermarriages between the royalty and the clergy). Just reading the "who's who" descriptions on plaques about the portraits you start to get a feel for interrelationships. Many of the artistic images in the churches are military (they raised their own armies for the crusades) and the monarchy could not wage war in the middle ages without support from the Church.
