Yes, over the top in every sense

When you tour the palaces and churches you see what could be done in the era without regard for cost -- actually the opposite: If it was a ridiculous cost that was all the more reason to do it, as the grandiose structures and art were in some sense an extension or expression of the wealth, power and ego of person who commissioned it.

The carvings and doorways in Spain and the Moorish architectural influence made for very impressive entrances to even basic residential buildings. Walking the streets in the old sections of the cities the open entries into the courtyards often had massive intricately-carved wooden doors with intricate mosaic-walled courtyards.

This image is not unusual for the door to a Madrid apartment building, typically there would be a courtyard inside with mosaics, scrolled metalwork and carvings
