I noticed that too - lol, it was hard to miss. That happened, it seems, while being towed - or maybe when he drifted into Newport Harbor (!) and secured his boat to a bulkhead at Fort Adams! (A harbormaster's boat got him off of there eventually - if I recall the story correctly). The fairing on the hull was VERY thick! This was done by the builder, though, not by him. Except in damaged areas, this actually meant that the hull looked like it was glass - which was almost certainly why it was done to begin with. Personally, I like the look of chines and like steel boats which look like steel boats.
As I was in my dinghy talking to the owner the first time, I noticed what seemed to be a 6 inch vertical saw cut in the fairing! I asked him about it - and he was surprised!!!! - and didn't have an explanation for why it was there!
The wooden deck (over a steel deck) looks nice too, but I wonder what's going on under the teak.
