Not that simple

I think my mechanic nailed it (see my post below). Will find out soon enough.
The NMEA converter is on the same circuit that powers other instruments, but those are collectively on a 15A panel breaker, and each device has its own fuse. The fuse that blows is a 5a blade type ATO/ATC automotive fuse in the course computer that is on the output labeled SeaTalk.
