With NOTHING else connected to it?

() You had the Ground co-connected to the engine panel (even the lighting). If it's not the ground (or you have a question, then run BOTH the hot and the neutral , You want to have a "clean" connection to the battery with nothing interposing on it. If that works, then you're golden, if that doesn't, then it might actually be something else.
